Why My Practice Is Private Pay, and How It Benefits You
I respect every person’s desire or need to use their insurance, however there are reasons I choose not to work with insurance companies. To ensure you are receiving the best care possible, I tailor therapy to meet the needs of my clients without having the constraints of managed care.
My practice is private pay only, which means I do not accept insurances. I believe providing my clients with information about using their insurance benefits for their mental health care is beneficial when making an informed decision.
It has been my experience that many consumers are not aware of what an insurance company requires from a therapist before approving payment for mental health care services. Most insurance companies require therapy to be “medically necessary”. This means I would be required to provide to insurance companies the specific nature of your mental health issues: including, but not limited to, a diagnosis, treatment goals and progress in meeting those goals. This information will become part of your permanent health care record. For those with existential issues or in couples therapy, I am not comfortable assigning a mental health diagnosis. Being given a mental health diagnosis may also become a problem in the future. For example, when applying for life insurance, that company will require your diagnosis and all the information collected during the period you spent working with a therapist, and may effect your life insurance costs.
Often insurance companies have the final say in the methods used, will allow only a specified number of visits per year and determine the frequency in which you receive therapy treatment. The benefit to you as a private pay client is the freedom for you and I only to determine the course of treatment and frequency of sessions, as well as complete confidentiality of one’s mental health concerns.
I am happy to answer any questions you may have regarding my fees and policies, and I encourage you to give the issue considerable thought when making healthcare decisions.
